What you should know about DIE WAENHUIS

Our dedicated staff: Elsie Maasdorp, Sophie Hans and Chritien Stuurman have all been with us for years and are an integral part of our lives and our success. We settled here in 2002 after both leaving our professions and taking over this business to make it our own and develop it into the guest house we are proud of today. We see this not only as a job, but as a lifestyle of service and interaction with the many interesting people who cross our doorstep and enrich our lives. Johan is a keen golfer and Madeleine loves gardening, interior decorating, cooking hiking and reading. We both love traveling and have done so extensively in Southern Africa and a little bit in Europe. The establishment consists of the main house with 7 rooms all en suite. All rooms are luxuriously and individually decorated with antique and vintage pieces combined in an eclectic style with modern conveniences. Each room is suitably equipped with either air conditioning (3 rooms) or fans and heaters or underfloor heating, electric blankets, and one room has a fireplace. The lounge with plenty of space to relax or play a game has a Victorian fireplace for cool evenings, an honesty bar and some interesting books. There is an 8m swimming pool, huge trees on the edges, interesting flower beds with lots of indigenous and other old favourite species creating a tranquil haven to relax. The covered verandah is a pleasant spot for breakfast in summer or sundowners. Breakfast is a feast, served in front of the old Dover stove in winter, and sometimes on the veranda if preferred. We love to treat our guests with special coffee, home baked bread and croissants, home made preserves, platters of a selection of cold meats and cheeses, etc. This house with its huge plot right down to the river was probably hovering on the forest edge. It originally had a thatched roof and a rounded (leg of mutton) gable. In those days Sayer tells us the buck wagon was at the height of popularity in George, bringing products from the farms on market day, the ox wagon was the means of transport across the mountain for the precious product of timber from George’s forests and the main trades of town revolved around wood cutting, transport driving and furniture making, therefore the name DieWaenhuis or Coach House. We see our calling here to upkeep this old legacy of George and share it with others.
