What you should know about Island Lake
The area sports an abundance of indigenous trees where over 280 species of bird life can be found. The view across the lake and camping sites or from our comfortable and spacious rondavels are stunningly beautiful and is nature's own gentle relief from the stress and strain of modern life. Island Lake Holiday Resort is situated on the shores of the beautiful Island Lake in the spectacular Wilderness National Park, right in the heart of the famous and majestic Garden Route. We are only a 20 km drive away from either George or Sedgefield & 47 km away from Knysna, with the village of Wilderness, a few minutes away, where restaurants, take a way's, supermarkets and pubs are to be found. Each site that has 10-amp electricity, is large and spacious, with drinkable water taps nearby. From most sites you have a glorious view of the lake, and launching facilities for your canoe or speedboat within sight of your stand or rondavel. Our meticulously clean, spacious and recently renovated ablution facilities, always has piping hot water on tap, are continuously serviced in season, with large sculleries. We offer you a coin-operated Laundromat with ironing facilities, enclosed wash lines, adjacent the ablution block. Our Lakeside Rondavels (one room only) are fairly basic, cosy, clean and neat. Bedding is supplied and each rondavel has its own braai facility and a fantastic un-obstructive view of the lake. They do not have bathrooms, but are very close to the main ablution facility. Our facilities are what set us apart, and we know they'll make your stay with us even more enjoyable. With the help of our three resident African elephants Harry, Sally and Duma you will learn about the sad and mystical story of the Knysna Elephants. In the heart of South Africas famous Garden Route, a charming world of lakes, rivers, fens, estuaries and beaches gently unfolds against a backdrop of lush forest and lofty mountains, all elements that characterizes the Wilderness National Park. Nature trails wind through densely wooded forest and along tranquil rivers, offering you the opportunity to encounter the brilliantly coloured Knysna lourie, or one of the five kingfisher species that occur here. Whether you're staying for a weekend or a month youll always find things available to suit all interests, ages and life-styles. The limestone layer was formed by the deposit of oolites which are loosely-bound calcium. Cango Wildlife Ranch is internationally recognized for its far-reaching conservation efforts. We are the leading breeders of cheetah in Africa, and one of the largest in the world. The eastern Head is densely covered with luxury houses. On the lagoon, a small beach offers safe swimming waters, showering facilities and access to the NSRI aquarium. A walkway leads to the end of the head offering breathtaking views of the stormy sea channel and the opposite shore. The Western Head is largely undeveloped and encompasses the Featherbed Nature Reserve. Ferry trips and guided trails to the reserve are available.
