Kiewietsvlei was started by Jac and Jenny van Niekerk in 1974.

Kiewietsvlei, Fresh Produce Farm, is nestled in the scenic hills of Wilderness Heights, close to George in the Garden Route. It is a family-owned farm since 1974 and is now run by Joanne and David van Niekerk and their commitment to sustainable farming is firm as ever. The farm has been supplying local shops and restuarants with lettuce (crisp and fancy), tomatoes, cucumbers, spinach, oriental vegetables and baby marrows for the past 40 years. The GLOBALGAP standard is primarily designed to reassure consumers about how food is produced on the farm by minimizing detrimental environmental impacts of farming operations, reducing the use of chemical inputs and ensuring a responsible approach to worker health and safety. Following food safety scares such as mad cow disease and pesticide concerns, consumers throughout the world are asking how food is produced. Based on these concerns, retailers and there global suppliers have created a series of sector specific farm certification standards. The aim of GlobalGAP in the application of these principles is to ensure integrity, transparency and harmonization of global agricultural standards. The farm is certified and is annually controlled by a GlobalGAP approved certification body. They have to comply with the principles of Good Agriculture Practice (GAP) in the GlobalGAP standard. This ensures that all products are traceable from sowing right through to delivery. The implication of being GlobalGAP accredited is that there are very specific fertilizers and sprays that are allowed. The standard is moving towards using more and more organic products. This means that the farmer can only use a very limited range of products which often cost more but ensures consumer safety.
